Training and Outreach Manager

Professional Trajectory

My early experience working with a general surgeon deeply influenced my path into commercial tobacco prevention. I observed firsthand how tobacco use negatively impacted patient outcomes — from delayed healing to post-operative complications, especially in patients who continued smoking or using smokeless tobacco after surgery. That experience planted the seed for a career focused on promoting wellness and reducing harm from nicotine and tobacco use. Later, when I relocated to a smaller community, I was fortunate to serve as a prevention specialist for a nonprofit organization dedicated to youth-focused substance use prevention. Through delivering evidence-based programming like Too Good for Drugs and coordinating the facilitation of the Northern Rio Arriba Communities Health Coalition, I had the opportunity to incorporate tobacco prevention efforts into broader public health initiatives. Additionally, I engaged in SYNAR compliance checks in collaboration with the New Mexico State Police Compliance Division, further reinforcing the importance of early intervention and policy enforcement in reducing youth access to tobacco products.
Currently, in my role at RVO Health, I have served as the Health Systems Change Specialist and, more recently, the Training and Outreach Manager. These roles have allowed me to educate health professionals, community members, and organizations about the dangers of nicotine use and the importance of cessation. I conduct trainings on brief tobacco interventions, promote state quitlines, present at state and regional conferences, and engage with local communities at outreach events. I’ve implemented these trainings in diverse settings, including recovery centers, behavioral health centers, oral health care providers, hospitals, and Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs).
These formative experiences instilled a lasting commitment to advancing tobacco cessation and prevention strategies, particularly in underserved communities.

What do you enjoy most about your work?

What I enjoy most is the opportunity to engage directly with communities. Whether I’m working with health professionals, school systems, Native American tribes, Hispanic communities, or coalitions, I find fulfillment in sharing knowledge, listening to lived experiences, and empowering individuals with the tools to support quitting. Building trust and relationships across diverse communities allows me to be a bridge — connecting people to the resources and support they need while advancing systems-level changes that sustain impact over time.

How does your work intersect with the FTSP?

My work history, past and present, directly supports Goal 3 of the Florida Tobacco Prevention Strategic Plan (2022–2027): to increase quitting among tobacco users through expanded access to evidence-based cessation services, especially in communities experiencing health disparities.

At RVO Health, we are committed to:
* Reducing barriers to cessation support in underserved communities;
* Expanding access to evidence-based treatments across diverse community and clinical settings; and
* Promoting systems change by supporting health organizations in adopting policies that prioritize routine tobacco use screening and intervention.

Our approach emphasizes collaboration, health equity, and sustainability — key tenets of the FTSP. By aligning our efforts with the strategic plan, we can ensure that individuals across Florida have equitable opportunities to live free from commercial tobacco dependence.

Benefits of being involved with the FTSP workgroup

Being part of the FTSP Workgroup 3 offers a valuable opportunity to collaborate with like-minded professionals dedicated to reducing the burden of tobacco use in Florida. Our involvement enhances the collective impact of cessation efforts by serving as a complementary resource — not a duplication — within the broader tobacco control landscape.

It allows us to share insights, align strategies, and extend the reach of cessation services, particularly in communities where tobacco-related disparities persist. Together, we are building a more coordinated, equitable, and effective approach to helping Floridians quit commercial tobacco.
